Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu Travel Guide

Temple city Thanjavur is located in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. It is known as Tanjore. It is a centre for South Indian art and architecture housing a large temple complex called Brihadeeshwara Temple.

Tanjore Painting, a unique style of painting is derived from this city. It is also known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. The district headquarters is located in this city. The city lies in the Cavery River delta which is very fertile for agriculture.Thanjavur city had its peak time during the Chola period in the Indian history. In the time of Raja Raja Chola the Brihadeeshwara temple was built. The city came under the Pandyas, Vijayanagara Kings and the British later. The Maratha rulers occupied the city till the British annexed it. So, it suggests that, Thanjavur witnessed a confluence of South Indian culture and the Maratha culture.

The Brihadeeshwara Temple was built around 11th century by the Chola King Raja Raja Chola. Temple walls are painted in the Tanjore style of painting. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There is a palace built during the Nayak period which is called the Thanjavur Maratha Palace. Remember to see the saraswathi Mahal Library which is situated in the palace. An art gallery, a church built during the period of Serfoji II.

It is the base for Carnatic music, Tanjore painting, Kuchipudi dance and Dravidian Temple architecture. The Tyagaraj Aradhana is the very famous music festival of this city.

Tourism, agriculture and handloom silk are the main revenue yielding factors of the city. Handicrafts and metal crafts are also very famous. Musical instruments like Veena, Tanpura,Violin, Kanjira are manufactured here.

It is well connected by road and railways. Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Madurai, Kumbakonam, Tirunelveli, Bangalore, Ernakulam, Tirupathi and Thiruvanthapuram are connected by direct buses. The city has a railway station connecting Karnataka, Kerala, Allahabad, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi and major cities of Tamil Nadu.
