Tawang is a town situated in the mountainous region of the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is the head quarter of the district of the same name Tawang district. The town is located at the altitude of 3048 m and is mainly known for its monasteries. It happens to be the birth place of sixth Dalai Lama ( the spiritual head of the Buddhists). The town is situated amid a picturesque nature and offers the visitors many places of attraction in and around it. Tawang Monastery is an old one and regarded as the most sacred place by the Buddhist in the region. The monastery houses an 8 m high beautiful statue of Lord Buddha. Urgelling monastery is another monastery you can visit in Tawang.
Take some time out to visit the Orchid Sanctuary situated near the town of Tawang. It is also called as Tipi Orchid Sanctuary. The sanctuary is known for housing orchids in large number. You can also get to see here other species of animals and birds. Don’t forget to visit Jaswantgarh on your trip to Tawang. It is a War Memorial built in the memory of Indian Soldiers who laid their lives in the war with China in 1962. If you are trekking enthusiast, you will find Tawang a perfect place for trekking. The permit can be availed at Kolkata, Guwahati, New Delhi and Tezpur.
Visit Tawang in summer as the temperature is moderate while it can drop to freezing point in winter. The monsoon in Tawang receives extreme rainfall. Reach here via Tezpur. It is the best way to visit Tawang.
Tezpur Airport serves it as the closest airbase to it. From Tezpur it takes about 15 hours by car to reach Tawang. Airport of Tezpur is linked by regular flights to Kolkata and other major cities of India.
