According to legends, Sivakasi became a holy town after an incident that had taken place around 14th and 15th century. A Pandya ruler was bringing a Shiva Lingam for constructing a temple in Tenkasi, on the way the cow that was carrying the Lingam refused to move from a place and the ruler decided to install the lingam in that place only. The place is now known as Sivakasi.
