Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya state in India. It is the administrative headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district. This is small hill city situated at about 4908 feet above the sea level. It is called the Scotland of East for the landscape.
The city was the capital of former undivided Assam till 1972. In the year 1972, Meghalaya was formed as a separate state and Shillong was made the capital of the state.

The city has one small airport (Umroi Airport) which is connected only to Kolkata by occasional flights. This airport is quite far from Shillong. It is better to travel via Guwahati, which is the nearest major airport for Shillong. Guwahati Airport is located at about 100 km.
