Parambikulam Wild life Sanctuary is located in Chittur taluka of Palakkad district of Kerala state in India. This sanctuary is spread in an area of 285 Sq. Kms and it is part of Parambiculam Tiger Reserve spreading over 390 Sq. Kms. There are about three water reservoirs which are manmade; they are Parambikulam reservoir, Thunacadavu reservoir and Peruvaripallam reservoir. Theuvaiar waterfalls drop into Thunacadavu reservoir. Other natural source of water is three major Rivers in the area The Parambikulam River, the Sholayar River and the Thekkedy River other Rivers are The Karappara River and The Kuriarkutty River. There are seven major valleys in the area making it more adventurous for the trekking enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy Trekking and boating in the area but with advance permission of the forest center. Parambiculam can be reached directly by road from Palakkad (110 Kms) by road via. Pollachi (65 Kms). Nearest Railway station is Pollachi. Nearest Airport is Coimbatore (120 Kms via. Palakkad). For staying there are State Forest Department Rest houses at Thoonakkadavu, Thellikkal and Elathode. There is a tree house in the reserve forest area near Thoonakkadavu. There are many varieties of Flora and Fauna in the reserve forest. The types of Fauna include 39 species of Mammals, 16 species of Amphibians, 286 species of Birds, 61 species of Reptiles, 47 species of Fishes, 1050 species of Birds and 125 species of Butterflies. There are a large number of floral cultures in the forest. The biggest tree in Asia, ‘Kannimara Teak’ is here in Thoonakkadavu village, the tree is about 450 years of age its width is about 7meters and the height is 50 feet. Kannimara has been awarded the Mahavriksha Puraskar by the government of India.
