Lansdowne is located within the Uttarakhand State of India. It is a city in the Pauri Garhwal district of the state. It is a small hill station at an altitude of 1,700 meters above the sea level. It was named as Lansdowne after a British Viceroy of India. It was a British cantonment earlier and now serves as a base for the Indian army and also for the Garhwal Rifles. It is a popular tourist spot of the Uttaranchal tourism. You can reach Lansdowne via Delhi. The city is 250km from Delhi. Kotdwara is the nearest railway station. Dehradun is the nearest airport. It is well connected by road. Lansdowne is ideal for the weekend getaways from Delhi city. A walk down the thick oak and Pine forest, a view of the snow-clad mountains are the major attractions. Other than that Lansdowne hosts war memorials, a camp of Garhwal rifles, and a few temples. Tarakeshwar Mahadev temple is one among them. It is situated at a distance of 33 km from Lansdowne. About 14 km drive from the city there is an ashram known as Kanwashram. It is the ashram referring back to the stories of Mahabharatha belonging to the sage Kanva. Shakuntala, lived here for some time after Dushyanta deserted her and gave birth to a son named Bharatha.
