Gorakhpur is the head quarters of the Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh. It is a well known city in the region. The city heads the North eastern Railway zone, houses the main branch of Gita Press, is the home for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sites, is situated at the Himalayan foothills.

The city is said to have been the place where Gautam Buddha renounced his prince hood. Legends state that the place had links with the Mahabharatha epic. It is said that Sant Gorakhshnath lived here around the 12th century AD.

It is a pilgrimage city comprising Hindu, Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage sites. Gorakhnath Temple is the most popular spot of the city. Tuesday and Saturday s are the most precious days for the visit.

Visit Leela Chitra Mandir which is like a museum. The museum is managed by the Gita Press. You would be enthralled by the paintings depicting stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha.

A 12th century Vishnu Mandir is located in this city that attracts visitors. A sun temple surrounded by water is on the outskirts of the city about 10 km away.

You might be surprised to know that it was near this city, the most revered mystic bard of our country had lived. It was Kabir. Kabir had lived in Maghar village, which is at a very short distance from the city. The village houses a Samadhi of the bard.

People who are there for holidays can visit Neer Nikunj water park, Vinod Van, rail museum, Lord Buddha Sangrahalay, Ramagarh Lake and Bakhira sanctuary.
