Eluru is the administrative headquarters of West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation.
The city is a trade link for exporting paddy, tobacco and coconut. It is best known for incense sticks.
It was called Helapuri in the early historical periods. The region comprising Eluru was a part of the Vengi Buddhist kingdom. Later, in the British period it came under the Madras Presidency. The city was made the headquarters after the separation of West and East Godawari districts.
It is situated in the Coastal region of Andhra Pradesh about 70 km off the coast of Bay of Bengal. A river named Tammileru passes through the city and a lake named Kolleru is located on the outskirts of the city.
