Dharwad, Karnataka Travel Guide

Dharwad is best known as the ‘cultural centre’ of the Karnataka state. This city is a part of Hubli-Dharwad twin cities. The city is located in the North-Karnataka belt being the administrative headquarters of the Dharwad district.

The city has given birth to many prominent poets, writers and classical music maestros of Hindustani style. This is the city of D.R. Bendre, the winner of Jnanapeetha Samman. Being an important educational hub, the city houses many prestigious colleges and schools. The Karnataka University of Dharwad is one of the oldest universities of Karnataka.

Hubli and Dharwad are known as twin cities. Both the cities are well connected by city buses and trains. Hubli is just 22 km away from Dharwad and is the nearest domestic airport. Dharwad is linked to Bangalore by plenty of luxury buses and direct trains. The distance between Bangalore and Dharwad is about 425 km.

Dharwad is a quiet city compared to Hubli. The city enjoys hot summers and good rains. It was famous for lakes earlier; now, some of them have dried up.

Dharwad used to be the cultural centre for poets, writers and classical singers, and even today it has retained status though the glory of the past encompasses the present. Hindustani singers, such as, Sawai Gandharva, Mallikarjun Mansur, Bhimsen Joshi, Basavaraj Rajguru, and Gangubayi Hangal belong to this city. The economy of the city is largely benefitted by agricultural products and the industries of Hubli. Hubli, being the main centre for trade and commerce, fulfils the aspirations of many unemployed youth.

Dharwad is well connected through Hubli. It has a railway station of its own and major trains connecting Delhi and Bangalore stop at this station. Plenty of city buses run between the twin cities. The city can accommodate all kinds of tourists. The Hubli Airport was inactive for quite some time, but, the Jet Airways has started regular flights from Mumbai now.

The city houses a memorial built in the memory of the late poet D.R.Bendre. The poet’s birthplace is well preserved and the surrounding area is the favourite spot for the visitors.

Take a round of the University campus that hosts a botanical garden.

If you are interested to explore further, you can get away from the city and travel towards Dandeli. You would be enthralled by the landscape of Dandeli forest. Visit Silver Rocks, a favourite excursion point for nature lovers.

Saundatti, the abode of Renuka Mata, is at about 40km away from Dharwad.
