Bhandardara, Maharashtra Travel Guide

Bhandardhara is situated about 185kms from Mumbai and about 103kms from Pune. It is a perfect picnic place for spending time with your family. Situated in the Sahyadri hill range, the place offers good picnic spots, and waterfalls. It is in the Ahmednagar district of the Maharashtra State. Pravara River flows through this city. You can reach Bhandardhara through Mumbai or through Pune by air. If you are travelling by train then go via Igatpuri, which is just 23kms away from Bhandardhara. Igatpuri is the nearest railway station.

Places to see

Wilson Dam: This dam happens to be the oldest earthen dam in India; it has been built around 1910. The dam is built upon river Pravara. It has two crust gates. During Monsoon you would get spectacular cascades if the gates are opened. There is a beautiful garden near the dam site.

Arthur Lake: It is lake situated amidst Sahyadri hills. The lake gets its water from Pravara River.

Mount Kalsubai: It is the highest peak point in Maharashtra. It is at an altitude of 1,646kms. Good spot for trekkers.

Agasti Rishi Ashram: This place has mythological connection. In the Ramayana, Rama during his exile met Agastya rishi here, in this place. The ashram is still visited by lot many tourists.

Ratangad Fort: This fort was used by Shivaji –the Maratha ruler for leisure. The fort consists of two caves on the topmost point and is a place with natural surroundings.

Randha Falls: This is a waterfall created by river Pravara. It is about 11kms from Wilson dam. The river falls from about 45meters height. Water from this falls is used for hydro-electric power. There is another falls near Wilson dam i.e. Umbrell Falls. Umbrella falls will be seen only during Monsoon. Visit Bhandardhara during Monsoon to get the best out of your trip. If you plan properly, you can include Nashik to this Monsoon package because Nashik is just 70kms drive from Bhandardhara and Nashik is worth visiting during rains.
