Amarnath, known for Amarnath temple is situated on the Mount Amarnath of Jammu and Kashmir State. It is a pilgrimage center for Hindus; however people belonging to all traditions visit this temple. The temple is known for Shiva Lingam created by ice. Every year thousands of pilgrims make a trip to this holy place. This place has a mythological background. It is said that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of creation and immortality to his spouse Parvathi here in this place. Shiva had chosen a remote, inaccessible place for his task and that place is now revered by pilgrims. The ice Lingam melts after May and again during winter season starts taking a shape. The temple is situated at an altitude of 3888 meters above the sea level. The temple can be reached via Srinagar (141kms). There will be ‘Yatras’ towards Amarnath organized by the Government providing all safety measures for the pilgrims visiting that temple. Journey towards Amarnath becomes risky due to land sliding and in recent years the place saw some terrorist attacks also. The ideal time to visit this shrine is in the month of Shravan (July and August). Usually the devotees walk up to the shrine on foot from a destination called Pahalgam, which is 42kms drive from Amarnath. The distance between Pahalgam to Srinagar is about 96kms. Srinagar has a good airport; one can take flights up to Srinagar and then may proceed towards Amarnath. What makes the Yatra memorable is the way towards the temple. Snow clad Himalayan glaciers, fresh water rivers, sunlit mountains give a kind of life time experience. You would just forget the fatigue of travel after reaching the temple, say the pilgrims who have visited the shrine already. You would be provided with tents for accommodation in Amarnath since the place has no Hotels over there.
